Common questions

Everything worth knowing before you start writing.

What is Quilla?

Quilla is a daily journaling app built around Stoic practice. Each day it offers a prompt drawn from Stoic philosophers such as Marcus Aurelius, Seneca and Epictetus, and you write a short reflection in response. Entries are private and end-to-end encrypted.

Is Quilla private? Can anyone else read my journal?

No. Journal entries are end-to-end encrypted in your browser with AES-256-GCM before they are sent anywhere. The encryption key is protected by a recovery key generated on your device and never transmitted, so Quilla cannot read your entries and neither can anyone who obtains access to the database.

Can I export my journal entries?

Yes. The Entries page has an Export button that downloads all of your entries as a .zip of Markdown files, one per entry, named by date. Each file contains the date, the Stoic prompt you wrote against including its author and source, and your reflection. The archive is assembled in your browser, so your entries are decrypted on your own device and the readable text is never sent anywhere.

How much does Quilla cost?

Quilla costs $1.99 per month after a 7-day free trial. You can cancel at any time and keep access until the end of the billing period you have already paid for.

How do I sign in to Quilla?

Quilla uses magic links. You enter your email address and receive a sign-in link, so there is no password to create or remember. Reading your entries on a new device additionally requires your recovery key.

What happens if I lose my recovery key?

Day to day you will not need it. Each device you sign in on keeps your journal key, so the recovery key is only asked for when you open Quilla somewhere new. Keep it in your password manager and that is the end of it. If you do lose it and no device of yours still holds the key, your entries cannot be recovered by you, by Quilla, or by anyone else — that is the cost of encryption nobody else can open, and we would rather say so than pretend there is a reset.

What is Stoic journaling?

Stoic journaling is the practice of writing a short daily reflection guided by Stoic philosophy, focusing on what is within your control and how you respond to what is not. Marcus Aurelius kept the notebooks now published as Meditations as exactly this kind of private practice.
